Ilkley trades and businesses show support for with those with dementia
Claire Lomax ,
Karl from K.Glazing, explains why it is vital that businesses and, especially trades, become Dementia Friendly, to an IlkTWENTY-four trades and businesses showed their support for those living with dementia in Ilkley by attending an event at the Clarke Foley Centre to find out how they could become dementia friendly.
They took part in a dementia friends information session delivered by Dementia Friendly Ilkley Action dementia champions Alison Eagle and Sylvia Bergen to find out more about dementia and how it affects those living with dementia.
Karl Swain, of K.Glazing, the only trade nationally on the Dementia Action Alliance database, explained why it is vital that businesses and, especially trades, become Dementia Friendly.
He told the audience and how it has helped his customers who care for loved ones with dementia feel more comfortable when he is working in their homes. They know that he understands dementia and is happy to chat and makes sure that the environment is safe for those living with dementia.
Karl has even put the logo of being a recognised Dementia Friendly business - a forget-me-not - on his work t-shirts. Recently a customer on seeing the logo had the courage to admit she was worried about her husband but had no idea of what to do? Karl reassured her that advice and support is available, signposting her to the Alzheimer’s Society website and phone line and encouraged her to visit their GP.
Finally, the business and tradespeople found out how to register as a Dementia Friendly business with the Dementia Action Alliance by completing a simple form which includes committing to three actions or more. All those who attended the event committed to do so as soon as possible.
Alison Eagle, from Dementia Friendly Ilkley Action (DFIA), said: "It was great to see the enthusiasm and commitment of those attending to become Dementia Friendly, many of them go into people’s homes so it important that they understand the needs of those living with dementia. We need all businesses in Ilkley to commit so we can continue to make Ilkley a better community for those living with dementia.”

"ALAN Titchmarsh took time out after his appearance at the Ilkley Literature Festival to visit the Clarke Foley Centre, where he met members of Dementia Friendly Ilkley Action, DFIA, of which he is patron.
He was keen to find out more about dementia, how it affects people and those who care for them and especially the work of the group in Ilkley. He was interested to hear how businesses and organisations can become dementia friendly and pleased to hear that numbers are growing of those in Ilkley who have written action plans and are recognised as becoming dementia friendly, allowing them to display the forget-me-knot logo of Alzheimer's and dementia friends. He agreed it was important to educate people to help remove the stigma and fear around dementia, and was keen to hear about the work the group hope to do in the coming year with Ilkley Grammar School and local primary schools.
He offered his continued support to the work of DFIA and asked to be kept up to date of their activities in Ilkley, he looked forward to catching up next time he was in the area and expressed an interest in attending a Dementia Friends session to understand more about dementia and what can be done to support people living with dementia when his busy schedule would allow.
The next public Dementia Friends session is Thursday, October 20 at the Clarke Foley Centre from 10am to 11am."

Bradford's Dementia Friendly Community Programme, led by Cathy and Bev from Alzheimer's Bradford, were nominated in the final 3 in the Dementia Friendly Community - City section of the National Dementia FriendlyAwards 2016. Alison Eagle travelled with them to the ceremony at Westminster, London, representing DFIA who played an important role in helping them to be nominated for the award along with the work of Dementia Friendly Keighley. Sadly they did not win, but there were many projects that did not even make the finals. Angela Ripon compared the event and chatted afterwards to the team. Bradford was well represented with Emma Clayton from the Telegraph and Argus winning the Regional Dementia Journalism category and Bradford District Care Trust Community Dental Service winning the Dementia Friendly Organisation! We must certainly be doing soemthing right int eh district to make the final 3 of 3 categories! Glad DFIA could play their part!
